Dublin Castle dates from the early 13th centaury, it was commissioned by King John of England to improve the city defences. There was a structure on this site as far back as 930’s, it was formerly a Viking military base.
Over the years Dublin castle has been used for a variety of functions from being a meeting point for parliament to being a military barracks. It has also witnessed much change in Ireland throughout the years
In 1684 most of the castle was burned down and many parts of the structure were destroyed. Most of the present day castle dates from the rebuilt castle of the mid 18th centaury.
The castle continued to be used by the government of the United Kingdom until 1922 when the Irish free state was formed. Today it stands as one of Dublin’s most popular tourist attractions and as well as welcoming many tourists it also welcomes heads of state and European Union Presidents. |
