St Patricks Day is one of the biggest celebrations in Ireland and is celebrated in many countries throughout the World. The day is in celebration of Saint Patrick, on of the patron saints of Ireland and it is recognised as a public holiday in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
During the course of the day there are parades, feasts and masses of people celebrating by wearing green and drinking plenty of alcohol (usually Guinness). The largest parade is actually outside of Dublin, in New York where over 150,000 people march through the city and over 2 million people take part in the celebrations.
In Dublin there is usually five days of celebrations and usually 500,000 people take part in these celebrations. The St Patricks day festival was established in 1995 by the Irish government and it was decided to change from a single day celebration to a multi day event. |
